The Handfields of Contrecoeur were, for a long time, present in the administration of public affairs of their community.
In 1933, 34 and 35 Mr Napoléon Handfield was town-councillor.
In 1936 Mr Richard Handfield took his place and the next year, the said Richard, was elected Mayor. He stayed at this charge for 14 consecutive years, till May 1951. The same year, Mr Hector Handfield became town- councillor for several years.
The Handfields were also present in "Le Cercle Agricole de Contrecoeur" (Farmer's Union). In the news paper La Presse of Montreal, dated July 28th 1906, it is written: "There are over 200 members and one Director was Mr Elie Handfield".
The Council 2848 of the Knights of Colombus was established in 1941.Among the founders was His Honour Mr the Mayor Richard Handfield and Mr Armand Handfield.
