George Johnson Handfield

Died in Jamaica W.I. 1864

  FIVE BOYS OF THE SAME FAMILY AT THE WAR 1914-1918

The son of George Johnson Handfield, Charles Arthur Stuart Handfield, born in Jamaica during the year 1857, married in Australia on May 22nd 1886, Margaret E. Beverley, who, in a ten years period has given him five sons. All of them participated in the 1914-1918 world war.

The first, Charles Stuart Fitzgerald Handfield, born in Australia December 24th 1886, enlisted January 3rd 1918, was posted at Suez from July 17th 1918 to March 13th 1919.

The second, Cleve Egerton Paulet Handfield, born February 28th 1889, enlisted in the 45th Battalion of Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) on June 12th 1916. Disembarked in France March 28th 1917. Killed in action June 7th of the same year. His name is present on the Ypres Memorial.

The third, George E. Carey Handfield, born in Australia January 1st 1892, enlisted in the 2nd Battalion A.I.F. June 28th 1915. Disembarked in France March 28th 1916. Wounded in action July 22nd 1916. Sent back to England four days later. He recovered and on March 1917, he married Mary W. Keenan. Reembarked for France January 31st 1918 he is wounded for the second time May 19th 1918. Died of his wounds, two days later. He was buried in the Military Cemetery of Ebblinghem, Lot 11, Row C, Tomb no. 4.

The fourth, Francis John Handfield, born in Australia, December 5th 1893, enlisted in the 18th Battalion A.I.F. March 16th 1915. Disembarked in France March 25th 1916. Wounded in action November 5th 1917. Sent back to England seven days later to recover, then he was sent back home January 31st 1918 and discharged May 22nd 1918.

The fifth, Walter Hopton Handfield, born December 1st 1896, enlisted in the 2nd Battalion A.I.F. June 28th 1915.Disembarked in France March 28th 1916. Wounded in action July 23rd 1916. Sent to England 6 days later. When he was recovered he went back to France from October 9th 1917 till the end of the war. December12th 1918, he left for Australia and was discharged April 12th 1919.
