Born 1712, was appointed Governor of Nova Scotia in 1749. He brought with him from England 2,576 emigrants in 13 transport ships and July 2, reached Chebucto, the site of what is Halifax today. He returned to England in 1752 and, after serving in the House of Commons of England, became Governor of Gibraltar.
In 1745 was in command of a military unit at Annapolis. He commanded the Boston troops sent to Mines with Colonel Noble. He later commanded a group of New England rangers serving in Acadia. He also served as a member of the Council of Nova Scotia.
Chignecto was a French/Micmac settlement at the north end of the Bay of Fundy
