| Date : 10 01 2006 A relative brought this site to my attention. I have done quite a lot of research into my family tree here in Australia. As far as I know every Hauville in Australia is descended from John Philip Hauville (peut-etre Jean Phillippe Hauville ou Hauteville??) who came to Australia in the 1860s and had six sons. I am his great-grandson. He left no trace of his family details. Birth certificates of his children state that he was born in France in 1841 but his death certificate stated that he was born in Canada. It is quite likely that he claimed Canada as his birthplace late in life to simplify certain land dealings. Birth in Canada would have made him legally British. There are family traditions that his real surname was de Hauteville but that has never been confirmed. His first son (my grandfather) was christened as Charles Trenchard Hauville and the name 'Trenchard' my indicate some family connection. I believe that Trenchard like Hauville is a Norman name. As to our connections to the Handfield clan - I cannot say but I have just checked the Melbourne telephone directory and there is an Ivan Hauville who lives in the next suburb. My family is from John Handfield, b. 1854, Ulcombe, Kent. Died 1931. He moved to Fall River, Massachusetts. He had five children. S - John S., b. 1877, d. 1916 no children S - Stephen H., b. 1892, d. 1951 one daughter - Helen Louise My grandfather S - Charles Franklin, b. 1893, d. 1946 3 children Charles Kimball, b. 1916, d. 1979 2 Children **My father Harry Nelson, still alive Hazel Adelaide, still alive D - Alise, no birth date, no children d - Adelaide Gertrude, no birth date, d. 1956, no children My father went to Ulcombe in 1956 to visit a last remaining relative. At that time he was given several things found in an attic trunk: a few miniature portraits with woven hair as a backing; several scientific books,one with a coat of arms in it; a parchment summoning an ancestor - Salomon Handfield - to testify in a land dispute, the summons is dated "the third year of our reign, George III" I have been to Ulcombe, Kent several times. Graves of our ancestors could be found in the churchyard and inside the old church up to the right of the altar. However, they are now deteriorating badly. The church is an interesting Norman church with some still visible paintings on the walls. The church yard has two very old yew trees, officially recognized by th British govt as being 1000 yrs old. Yesterday, I received a copy of a family history from a branch of my husband's family that comes off of Richard Handfield Titherington of Chester, UK. The papers included Lt. Col. William Handfield as my husband's very distant grandfather who was the father of Grace Kilby Handfield, married to Edmund Ommaney Wrench (The paper said 'Ormandy') who gave birth to Eliz Wrench, who married Thomas Fluitt who gave birth to Eliza Grace who married William Tihterington of Dee Hills Estates, Gary's GR. GR. GR. Grandfather. I am amazed at the line of relatives that you have developed on this site and I think I am overwhelmed...ha! ha!.....'Hat's off to you' for all your diligent efforts in compiling such a vast collection of information. It is fascinating and it is great that Handfields can connect this way. Now, I have even a better understanding of why some of the offspring of William and Eliza of Dee Hills Estates in England, named one of their son's Richard Handfield Titherington in honor of the family connection to his Gr. Grandmother's maiden name and her father's name. On the record sent to me, Lt. Col. William Handfield is buried in the nave of the Chester Cathedral in Chester, UK. We were there last year, and the cathedral is worth a visit...it is gorgeous. We will return next year and look for William's grave and the various other relatives that are buried there according to the paper I received.
